Brought up as a pastor’s daughter Elisabeth was no stranger to persecutions and discriminations against protestant christians. Still, she had to learn for herself to not be afraid. She had to live with her “shadow” (security operative) watching her and her family all the time, with interrogations and threats against her husband.

Through it all she learned how to depend on her faith in God, find encouragement in the Bible, and refuse to let her circumstances dictate her resolve. She got taken to interrogations with her daughter and still had the courage to refuse to inform on others.

Today, she has no regrets. She has lived her life with courage and integrity. She stands by her man, not as a servant but as a partner. She is equal not because she compares her with her husband but because they both seek to walk humbly with God.

Reflection Questions:

  • Is the job of stay at-home mom, a pastor’s wife counter to feminist idea of what a woman can be?
  • How would you, as a woman, find the strength to encourage your husband to stand up for what is right even if you knew he may be put in jail, or “disappeared?”
  • Where do you find the strength to be there for your children and project strength when everything is uncertain around you?
  • How do you avoid turning to hate against the people “in the system” that is oppressing you?
