The mass suffering, persecution, and death caused by the Socialist and Communist regimes of the 20th century is poorly documented and little understood. Anywhere between 60 and 100 million have perished in the last century under the repressive regimes of Eastern Europe, Asia and beyond (Russia, China, Romania, Poland, Hungary, Vietnam, Cambodia, etc.)
Instead of utter disgust there is a thoughtful acquiescence, and even respect, for the regimes and the ideologies that have brought so much suffering. Just like the NAZI regimes, they were fueled by the corruption of seemingly good ideas, and ruined an entire century.
Some, including our own relatives, have said: “Why do you worry about those dead [communists]?” Some are content to say that things were bad, but “at least we all had jobs,” and “there was no homelessness.” This is the most insidious kind of cop out from those who should know better, from those who have seen tyranny face to face. In 2017, in Sydney, we saw a sign that read: “Socialism Now!” Today we know of people who identify as “Communists.”
The former are failing to inform the latter. The previous generation is failing to pass along what they have seen and experienced. The Victims of Communism Remembrance Day is important not only to keep alive the memory of those who suffered, but to protect our generation and future generations from tyranny. With those who have suffered under NAZI regimes, we raise our voices and say: Never forget!!!
At Overcome International, we have vowed to keep accountable the past, forgive when there is no restitution possible, but never forget! Will you join us in remembering this year, and every year? Will you join in and support us in documenting, teaching, and facilitating conversations about freedom in our own country?
